Its been 3 months since I exhibited 'Dashing Away' at Ormesby Hall. 3 months of great family times. 3 months of reflection and 3 months of minimal art activity!
The physical objects at Ormesby Hall, their beauty and their presence was all I needed. Since then, however the absence of beautiful objects to draw has been a puzzle.
An online course on sketchbook skills at access art http://www.accessart.org.uk/developing-sketchbook-skills-approaches/ has been exciting, and I think is moving me forward. I had not realized that one can
a) construct/alter a sketchbook before making a single mark in it and
b) that sketchbooks need not be linear/chronological

The book I chose to use was the first sketchbook I bought about 7 years ago, when I started to to explore art, I then promptly filled it with notes from a conference! So I stuck paper all over the words and in the middle of the book discovered some drawings I had done when Oscar my first grandchild was months old. Rummaging through the house looking for different types of paper I came across a drawing he has just done of Oscar Potter - brother to Harry! Instant treasure!
To kick start the process of filling the book, I was given a list of random words and had to choose one to keep in mind while going through magazines and collaging images which took my fancy. Took longer than expected as I had firstly to go and buy some magazines. The internet has eroded the need for paper based media in our houae!
Different words from the list kept coming into my head and in the end I had to be very strict and limit myself to just 5. And then I needed to put them into a memorable form.
